UK FOUNDATION BOXER DOGSIn The Beginning……
The very first Boxer of which is known in this country was a bitch named Jondy, a daughter of Remos von Pfalzgau. Remos was himself a son of Hugo von Pfalzgau, one of the Flock and Meta von der Passage progeny. What happened to Jondy, who was born in 1911, has never been discovered. Like many others she possibly was kept as somebody's pet. There are no records that she had any pups. Another of the earliest importations was in 1919, when Dr McMaster of Ballymena, Northern Ireland, bought a dog and bitch from Germany, they were reported as being good specimens, but did not produce any offspring.
In 1932, Miss Patience M Rogers, the first English breeder of Boxers, imported "Cilly von Rothenburg". She was in whelp to "Drill von Kurland". The litter was born in quarantine on 16 Jun 1932. Only three dog puppies survived: Riverhill Racketeer Beginner of Willstud Willi von Brandenberg
"Cilly
von Rothenburg" "Cilly von Rothenburg", (Bitch, b. 7 Feb 1930, Breeder Herr G Fhlow, by Asso von Zenith - Evis von Niederhof). In the same gazette was another entry: "Riverhill Racketeer" (Dog, b. 16 Jun 1932, Breeder Miss P M Rogers, by Drill von Kurland - Cilly von Rothenberg).
The following year of 1933, Mrs C Sprigge imported a red dog from Paris; "Fritz of Leith Hill"
(Entred in Crufts 1936 & 1937 - Not for Competition)
In 1934, Mrs C Sprigge imported a young Dutch Brindle bitch; "Kralingen's Liesel " (Bitch, daughter of Ch Armin Edelblut).
It was in 1936, that Mr F W Burmann, of Berkshire, bred a litter, having imported two bitches: 1. Birka von Emilienhorst Sire - Tasso von Isebeck Dam - Alice von Emilienhorst Sire - Sieger
Hansl von Biederstein Dam - Indra von Biederstein
In 1936 Mrs C Sprigge imported a lightly marked golden brindle from Germany; “Gretl von der Boxerstadt" (Bitch, b. 17 Aug 1934, Breeder Herr Hans Bietl, by Maxi von Friedenheim - Ickimaus v. d. Ickstatt). Entered in Crufts 1939 (Not for Competition) This bitch arrived in quarantine in whelp to Sieger Hansl von Biederstein,
who was a descendant of the brindle dog, “Caesar Deutenkofen”.
One of this original litter became the first British Boxer, Ch Horsa of Leith Hill, owned by Mrs H M Caro an early enthusiast of the breed and was the president of the British Boxer Club.
Also in 1936, Mrs Siggers imported from Munich a bitch, "Anita v. d. Konradshohe" which became "Cuckmere Anita v. d. Konradshöhe", the mother of: "Cuckmere Krin" (the first Boxer to be awarded a Challenge Certificate in Britain in 1939), and through him, the grandmother of Ch Cuckmere Krinetta, one of the first three post-war champions in 1947 and the first fawn to be a Champion. In December 1936, a number of the early breeders founded the British Boxer Dog Club, and held its first meeting at the R.A.C., Pall Mall, London. The first president was Mr W L McCandlish, and Mrs Sprigge was the first secretary and treasurer. Mr McCandlish was followed as president by Mrs Caro from whom Major Douglas F Bostock took over until 1963. The first executive committee consisted of Mr Allon Dawson, Mr G W Betteridge and Miss D Birrell. In 1937 the Club applied for and was affiliated to the Kennel Club. The first annual report stated that when the Club started there were 6 members and this number had increased to 12 in the first year. The original members were:
When the Club was first formed there was kept a British Dog register. By 1938 it contained the names of 82 dogs and bitches; • 18 carried the prefix of Leigh Hill,
belonging to Mrs Sprigge. No.1 on the register was "Fritz
of Leigh Hill", Becklybrook - Mrs H M Caro, first registered in Apr 1937. It was not until 1939 that there were sufficient registrations of Boxers for them to be given Championship Status. In 1939 there were 5 shows at which Certificates were awarded - Note: No Res CC were on offer in 1939. LADIES'

As the Boxer was only established in Britain in the mid-1930’s, and with the outbreak of the Second World War, all Championship shows automatically ceased. As a result, the early British show dogs were left with no hope of attaining their Championships. Of the early German importations two stand out above all others. These were a son and daughter of the famous “Lustig von Dom”, namely “Zuntig von Dom” and “Alma von der Frankenwarte”. A dominant influence on the early Boxer breed in Britain was the imported “Lustig von Dom” daughter, “Alma von der Frankenwarte” who found her home and life in the “Panfield” kennels of Mrs Elizabeth Montgomery. Directly from Alma came two influential sires, Ch Panfield Tango and Ch Panfield Ringleader. ALMA VON DER FRANKENWARTE
